Dave Koons and the Coyotes – Sat. 2/20/2016
Dave who and the what? I have never hear of these guys, didn’t know what to expect, and quite frankly did not care. I was here to see the funk masters – Mother's Finest. Then three older heavy set guys and two younger svelte guys take the stage for what looks like a backyard BBQ jam session about to start after 6 hour of drinking beer in the hot sun. After a false start on the opening number, I decide it was time to move away from the packed front of the stage and go get some air and a beer as clearly this was going to be armature hour, and we are all about to be held captive for some really bad, but potentially funny, music and stage antics.
Well, the adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” could not have been more appropriate. These guys were not only a good band, but they we entertaining as all hell. Their songs, almost all originals, with a few “sure bet” covers thrown in just in case, were high quality and presented with an appropriate balance of confidence and humility. I did not know a single one of their original songs, but I found myself paying attention to them, really liking them, and then considered buying one of their CD’s (which I could not find at the merchandising stand).
The crowd seemed to like the lead singer (I assume that is Dave) and he has a strong voice and plays the guitar well when paying attention to it. He got really sloppy at points, but it did not seem to matter. The other guitarist, who when placed next to Dave could present themselves as part of the Panthers defensive line (these are big dudes), played like he was wearing cement shoes. I don’t think he moved on inch the entire set. The keyboardist was hidden, but you could hear him very clearly- strong chops and nice tone. The rhythm section was interesting. These were the younger guys and they have clearly been playing together for a while as they locked into a groove and never fell out of it. Both are strong players on their respective instruments. The bass player seemed to be enjoying himself very much as he grooved with the music, while the drummer on the other hand, had a pissed off look on his face for most of the set, while producing some nice vocal harmonies that were abnormally low in the sound mix.
All in all, Dave Koons and the Coyotes are worth the price of admission and I would encourage anyone to get out to see them the next time they come to Charlotte. 4 Stars
